Claudia Grinnell delights with the second inaugural concert on our newly restored organ

‘The recital showed all the different aspects of the organ. It was an absolute joy!’ (comment by audience member).

Following the recital in late June by Philip Berg MVO, St John’s second inaugural organ concert was given by Claudia Grinnell on Sunday 9th July. What a delight it was too! This was Claudia’s second visit to St John’s having first played on our 1890 Charles Martin Organ in 2018/19.  It was a wonderful pleasure therefore to invite her back to perform on our newly restored instrument.

Claudia’s inspiring programme demonstrated the full range and versatility of the organ.  From Bach and Buxtehude to Mendelssohn , Boellmann, Gigout, and Guilmant, there was something for everyone.  The programme was further brought to life by Claudia’s spoken introductions to the pieces. Her informal approach, and the clear knowledge and expertise she displayed about pieces and their composers, were very well received by the audience and made the concert feel even more accessible.

‘Loved the range of organ music and the fact that each piece was introduced by the organist’.

‘A wonderfully varied programme presented with joy, happiness and enthusiasm.’

Our two inaugural organ concerts represent the first phase of the Education and Community programme linked to our organ restoration and conservation work.  Further events follow from September onwards including choral and organ concerts, workshops, and community singing. Do check What’s On regularly for further information and updates.

‘Wonderful, varied programme showing the amazing purity of sound from the restored organ in every possible mode.’

‘Excellent concert showing all the amazing qualities of the organ sound generation, at the hands of a splendid organist.  Beautiful clarity of individual notes, incredible long sustained chords and dramatic Toccata and Fugue from Bach set us trembling! Fabulous and awe inspiring’.
